Prayer and Body Life In The Church

I have been teaching Acts during Sunday School at Village Bible Church. Here are thoughts about prayer and Body Life in The Church from my study of Acts 4. These are not shocking revelatory. They are obvious. But are they evident in God’s Church today?
About Prayer:
1. Prayers that should be natural for The Church. Every situation must be presented to God in prayer.

2. Prayers that acknowledge God’s sovereignty over history, over our lives as we live for Him.
3. Prayers that use The Scriptures to apply to our lives.
4. Prayer requests that align themselves with God’s known will as revealed in the Bible.
5. Prayers that expect God to answer.
About Body Life or what the church should experience as normal daily life as community.
1. They had one “heart and soul.” Summarizes well what they were like as believers in JesusChrist.
2. They had everything (possessions) in common. They recognized they were stewards of what they had
from God. No Jewish dream?
3. The Apostles testified (boldly) the resurrection of Christ. It applies to all of us.
4. They experienced God’s grace and it was evident everywhere.
5. They had generosity. No one was needy. People who were more affluent or had more shared with those in need. They had no government programs just The Church.

Save A Life

Today is my 43rd BIRTHday. I am thankful to God for giving me life and for those he has put in my life to keep me safe. God used my mom (and my father) to give me life. I remember that my mom once told me someone close to her suggested to have an abortion when she was pregnant with me. She refused. I am thankful or I wouldn’t be here. This is not the case with the 54 million babies killed since 1974. No one protected them. I really don’t care to hear the politics of abortion because for me life comes from God. Every human life in any stage of life is sacred. This is not my opinion, it’s God’s truth. Here are some foundational passages from Scripture (see more here).

Exodus 20:13 “You shall not murder.

Job 31:15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
Psalms 22:10 I was cast on you from the womb: you are my God from my mother’s belly.
Psalms 139:13 For you have possessed my reins: you have covered me in my mother’s womb.
Psalms 139:14 I will praise you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are your works; and that my soul knows right well.
Proverbs 31:8 Open your mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
Isaiah 49:15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yes, they may forget, yet will I not forget you.
Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the belly I knew you; and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified you, and I ordained you a prophet to the nations.

This video challenged me today:

This man has saved over 1,000 babies in the 3 years he has done this full time. It challenged me to ask myself what I am doing to save a life. What is The Church, God’s prophetic voice, doing to save a life? What are you doing?

Choices, Consequences, and God’s Providence.

copyright 2013I cannot prove empirically how God’s providence is part of my life nor can I deny it. From a mere human perspective it appears that the choices I have made are mine alone and no one else’s. But as I think of the important decisions and choices I’ve made throughout life, I find too many that seem suspicious to be solely an act of my hand. When I made those decisions, frankly, I didn’t consult God as much. I just acted using my best judgment. Oh yes, I guess here is where we get into philosophical and theological discussions of what is our role and what is God’s role in our decision making. How do they happen? Who has control, God or myself? Does he accommodate to me or do I just followed a path he has already decreed? How do my decisions and choices affect the outcome of what He has decreed for me? I really don’t have a good answer.

Well, this has gotten too philosophical already and I have offered no real examples. But I wonder if I should. Alright I will be personal and offer a few. First in line is my decision to leave a tenured job as a teacher for an uncertain one. I was done with my fourth year of teaching and decided that I wanted to work closer to home. So I took a year off and worked as a sub for a district close to home. Only a few days before I had to submit my intent to go back I got an offer from the district closer to home. But this decision would take an me in an unintended path. It lead me to two districts, one charter school and a private school but never became tenured again. Looking back I must have made the wrong choice but when I think of the people I’ve met, the lives changed, the friendship forged, then I see it couldn’t have been all of my decision. Yes, it can be rationally explained but I know God’s guiding hand was involved.

Then there is the decision to leave ministry after six years and spend the next decade just teaching. I know the decision was the right one but looking back it seems that I wasted the years thereafter. But did I? I did have more time to spend with my family. This is also where the crisis of my faith happened. And yet I know God used this time to refine me and prepare me for what He has for me in the near future.

I could go on with more examples. What I do know is that I belong to God. I am his. He is there and not passive nor silent. Everything I do is in his care not outside of his care. When I think back of those decisions (and the domino effect of them), I second guess them but then I see the outcome. It just seems too much of a coincidence to leave God out. Some of those decisions were not easy and some have brought consequences that I would trade for ones that follow the status quo. Sometimes I speak to people whose lives have being lived with such steadiness that it makes me wonder whether that is even a good path. I cannot judge them for God does not work the same with everyone. But as for me I know my shepherd and he knows me. I am secured in His hand. He guides me in his path and when I don’t, He restores me. He is always with me. He comforts me. Someday I will be in his house forever!

Notes from Children

For the last four years or so at the end of the year, I ask students to write on a notebook anything they
want to say to me. Being the last year teaching, and since my students knew this, they wrote some thoughts for me. I’ve published some before. Here.

Why do this? Teachers don’t often hear how they have impacted their lives. I wanted to avoid this from the beginning of my career. I wanted my students to share the good and the bad, but especially what they learned. It gives helps me see that the time I’ve spent teaching has been worthwhile.

Here are some unedited excerpts:

  • “Dear Mr. Galdonut,  Thank you so much for teaching me this year! I learned so much. You have a great seance of humor. You also tell great stories, I learned alot of Language Arts and the Blooms Taxonomy of Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Analysis, Application and Knowledge…I know everyone from our class will miss you, God has a place for everyone where he is right…you are strong, compassionate, gentle, respectful, pleasing, humorous, ambitious, and many more…”

  • “Thank you for teaching me new ways of doing things. You are very HUMOROUS, HUMBLE, GENTLE and BOLD. Thank you for also pushing my limits and showing me my courage and what I’m capable of. You are a GREAT teacher. You are great at having fun and also smashing down boys! I love how you have A LOT of books.”

  • “Dear Mr. G, Thank you for a very good year. I learned a lot. You wanted me to be a great reader, and it worked. Now, my mom and dad are very proud of me because I read for fun…I liked how you liked me a lot. Also, the Bloom’s Taxomy was very interesting.  I wanted my writting to always be critical thinking.”
  • “Dear Mr. G., …I really enjoyed my time with you.  I liked how you sometimes forget to do the pledge and don’t do traditional American thing because my Grandpa is from Ecuador use to try and blend in…But your stories are what I’ll miss the most.”
  • “Dear Mr. G. Your the best teacher I had and when I say that I mean it… You have been a great teacher and you dissever to be treated right.”
  • “Dear Mr. G, I have to say, this was the best school Year I have had. It couldn’t have been without you. You were the best teacher I have ever had.”
  • “Dear Master Galdonut…You will always be my favorite teacher…I hope you will be a good pastor…”
  • “Dear Mr. G, Aurivua! Thank you for such a great year! Even though you gave us a lot of work (ha!) It was still fun. I will miss you!…”
  • “When I first got here, I was sad because none of my friends were here and I didn’t want you as a teacher. Now I couldn’t want anyone else as a teacher. You are a great friend and mentor. I will miss you…”
  • “This was a wonderful year. I learned a lot from you…You gave me many privileges this year.”
  • “Dear Mr. G, You were such an AWESOME Epic teacher this year…Thank  you for all you’ve done this year for us and especially me! (that was misspelled).”
  • “Dear Mr. Galdonut, At the beginning of the year I didn’t like reading. Now I love reading.”
I also received a few from parents confirming what students have said.

I will surely miss you! I’ve loved everyone of you! You have changed me also. Forever!
